The education community is mourning the loss of Larry Gibson, a respected educator, mentor, and friend whose passing has left colleagues, family members, and countless former students heartbroken. Tributes continue to pour in from those who had the privilege of working alongside him, reflecting on a life dedicated to teaching, creativity, and encouraging others.
One longtime colleague shared the profound sadness felt by many upon learning of Gibson’s passing. Having met through their involvement in AEA and AAEA, the two developed a friendship that spanned years of professional collaboration. Together, they attended numerous conferences, meetings, and workshops, sharing ideas and a common passion for education and the arts.
Larry was widely recognized as an exceptional middle school art teacher who inspired students to explore their creativity and believe in their abilities. Those who knew him describe a teacher who went beyond lesson plans, creating a welcoming environment where students felt supported, challenged, and encouraged to express themselves. His impact extended far beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting impression on generations of young people.
Outside of his professional life, Larry was known as an avid traveler and devoted family man. Friends recall his enthusiasm for discovering new places, meeting new people, and sharing stories from his adventures. Yet, despite his many interests and accomplishments, it was his kindness and ability to uplift others that stood out most. He had a gift for offering encouragement at just the right moment and making people feel valued.
His passing is made even more difficult by the fact that he had only recently entered retirement, a time many hoped would bring him years of enjoyment, travel, and time with loved ones. Instead, those plans were cut tragically short.
As friends, colleagues, and family members grieve this tremendous loss, they are also celebrating a life well lived. Larry Gibson’s legacy will endure through the countless lives he touched, the students he inspired, and the friendships he nurtured over the years. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
